Mom Knows Best

With all of the love and care our mothers have given us, they deserve a stylish shout out, don't you agree? This Sunday marks Mother's Day, and it's time to celebrate the fashion world's trendiest moms and give our own mommas some style tips. By overviewing celebrity moms' styles, we can help our very own mothers by improving their wardrobes. It's never too late for a fashion makeover! This week, my mom has made me proud with new trousers and a shirt from Vince. She came home saying, "I got a Vince shirt today. It's a total Zoe shirt, but it's for me." Thanks... But at least she's taking pride in her style - that's where I get it from! But, I digress. The world has many stylish moms [including my very own] and courtesy of Who What Wear, we're able to see just what some stylish moms in the spotlight prefer to include in their spring looks.

As shown above, these pieces reflect those of the celebrity moms that are also pictured. Styles similar to these can be purchased anywhere! My mom got her fabulous new Vince clothes at T.J. Maxx and it's a perfect example of how you can get so many great styles for less. Use these pieces as a foundation for your mom's Mother's Day gift and I guarantee if you shop around any average store or mall, you're bound to find something similar. After all, Mother's Day is about embracing your mom for all she's done for you, a chic gift is just extra! Good luck shopping for gifts, luckily, I've already gotten mine. I'd reveal it, but I think [or at least I hope] my mom reads my blog... So I'll just have to divulge that after Sunday. Until then, happy shopping and best of luck, sons and daughters. Remember, mom knows best, so think like her and you're sure to get the right gift.
Don't forget to add a little love. Make it special.
xx, SWEET

Out With the Mini, In With the Maxi

My initial reaction to a maxi skirt and maxi dresses when they first hit the fashion scene was "why?" But now, since the trend has caught on and stayed with fashion for several seasons, I'm able to see the style significance. Not only do they extend, well visually, the length of your legs, but they're so comfortable to wear. Worn long, flowy and light, this piece of apparel is impossible not to love these days. To add to the comfort factor and the flowy elements of this clothing, maxi skirts look fabulous in a variety of colors: coral, blue, patterned, neutral and color blocked hues all accent maxi skirts wonderfully. With the help of length and color, this garment will make anyone look fabulous and it's absolutely a staple for this season.
 ZARA / Tibi / ZARA
Although each maxi skirt above is categorized as the same color, they vary in structure and in tailoring. Each skirt is similar, but they all fall differently. Also, one if more sheer than the next and one maybe be thicker material than the other two. But what's important is color. The coral color is a wonderful hue for spring and summer because it accents a tan and dark skin perfectly. Just think Kerry Washington in peach at the WHCD. Perfect.
 Leoni / ASOS / ASOS
While coral was a more casual color, I think blue-colored maxis are more formal and fancy. Maybe it's because they're darker and deeper. But these floor sweeping skirts look great with dark or light pumps and bulking jewelry. Since it's a darker color, it's easier to go edgier with. A lot can be worked into a blue hue, whereas lighter colors are more limited.
Aryn K. / GAR-DE / Color Block
Color blocking is my go-to styling technique. And for maxi skirts, it's brilliant. If you have a maxi with a random stripe of color or a spot that differs in color from the rest of the skirt, it's easier to style than you've been thinking it is. All you have to do is find a shirt of another color and the three together will block it [and rock it]. It's really that simple! Color blocking doesn't have many boundaries; you just have to make sure not to clash colors.
 ZARA / Tibi / A.L.C.
My heart beats for patterned maxi skirts... Don't tell my boyfriend that. But in all honesty, just look at them and tell me they're not a dream. Flowy pleats and a perfect design on the same piece of fabric is just amazing to me. When wearing a "pattern perfect" maxi skirt, shy away from tops with patterns on them, too. Unless you're doing a stripes and florals-esque match, which is basically the only exception to this rule, refrain from it. Keep it simple with patterns because otherwise, you could ruin the entire look. Who would dare ruin a patterned maxi?
ZARA / Warehouse Brushstroke Maxi / Metallic
Last but not least, neutral maxis are a big hit this spring. With nudes and pastels trending, neutral maxis are a way to keep a soft hue going while having a trendy garment on at the same time. These skirts make it so you can work on other trends, and this one at the same time. Neutrals keep things, well, neutral, so it won't be an outfit overflowing with popular styles.

Now with all this maxi skirt talk, I want to wear mine! Oh, another piece of advice, BCBGMAXAZRIA has fabulous maxis with the best pleats and an unbelievable amount of "flow". I'm in love with them and they're always on sale at department stores, so you can get one for a steal. Just an idea for all of the style-curious readers. I can't wait until the heat cranks up and I'm able to keep cool in a long maxi with my lovely new wedges. Just remember, keep it simple! These skirts provide a simple look, so don't get too complex. Don't make the look harder than it has to be. Take advantage of this comfortable, convenient trend while it's here.
I hereby proclaim May Day as maxi skirt awareness day.
